A high school student was arrested Friday during a student-led walkout at George Washington Carver Center for Arts & Technology, according to Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS).

The walkout started at 10:20 a.m. and lasted for about 45 minutes. School staff and the school resource officer were present to supervise and ensure student safety.

Following the walkout, students returned to lunch or class, but a “small group of students chose not to follow the agreed upon parameters and did not reenter the building,” a letter from the school’s principal reads.

One student engaged in “disruptive and dangerous behavior” and was arrested by Baltimore County police for leaving campus and obstructing traffic.

Students who violated the schools’ Code of Conduct will face consequences in alignment with the school system’s student handbook and Board policy, according to BCPS.

School officials didn’t specify what the walkout was about, other than students “(expressing) their opinions on an issue that is important to them.” But, the school’s principal said the walkout was not a school or system-sanctioned event.

Our school is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students, and we will continue to work together to ensure that our students feel heard, respected, and valued,” the principal’s letter reads.
