ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries arrived at the State House in Maryland Wednesday for a series of meetings with Democrats as the push continues for mid-cycle redistricting.
Jeffries showed up in Annapolis just before 9 a.m. and is scheduled to meet with Gov. Wes Moore, House Speaker Joseline Pena-Melnyk, Senate President Bill Ferguson, and others.
When asked if Jeffries would be discussing redistricting today, he said, “in all likelihood.”
Jeffries was also asked what he would say to Democrats that say gerrymandering is bad for democracy overall.
“I think Jamie Raskin’s letter said it all,” Jeffries responded.
Jeffries’ visit raises the stakes for Ferguson as the pressure ramps up for the Senate President to put the proposed congressional map up for a vote. Ferguson has remained opposed, arguing jumping into the national mid-cycle redistricting fight could be too costly for Democrats politically and legally. Plus, Ferguson has argued there isn’t enough time to implement a new congressional map given the primary election schedule. The filing deadline is currently next Tuesday, though there is a bill proposed to push that deadline back.
The House of Delegates already passed the proposed new congressional map that could give Democrats an 8-0 advantage, pushing U.S. Rep. Andy Harris, Maryland’s lone Republican in Congress, out of office.
