ICE pursuit ends in crash on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY, Md. (7News) — A chase led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ended in a crash on Maryland’s Eastern Shore Friday after the driver they were pursuing ran a red light and slammed into another car, according to the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Gary Hofmann said he was on patrol in Stevensville when he saw a reckless driver cross several lanes while exiting westbound Route 50 and head onto northbound Route 8 at speeds above 75 mph.

The driver ran a red light at Route 8 and Main Street, crashing into a vehicle that was making a left turn.

Two unmarked vehicles with their lights on were pursuing the vehicle and arrived at the intersection seconds after the crash. Those officers were later identified as federal agents with ICE.

Sheriff Hofmann and the ICE agents helped everyone involved in the crash, and also requested that the person they were pursuing be evaluated by medics.

The sheriff’s office said the man’s injuries were caused by his “reckless operation” of the vehicle.

It is not clear why ICE was trying to detain the man and the sheriff’s office said they did not know the federal operation was happening prior.

Maryland State Police took over the crash investigation.
