HOWARD COUNTY, MD. (WBFF) — A Howard County jury found Columbia mom Wyketa Burgess guilty Thursday of attempted second-degree murder for her part in the 2024 shooting of four teens in a Giant parking lot, in what prosecutors called a case of “vigilante justice.”
The prosecution said Burgess and a fellow mother, Dieneba Traore, plotted the shooting to avenge for their sons being robbed and threatened. Burgess’ and Traore’s sons are cousins.
“[The case is about] the devastating consequences that occur when people take justice into their own hands,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Tiffany Vaira during opening statements at the trial last week.
Burgess, 40, was found guilty on 10 of the 14 charges levied against her, including the two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts conspiracy to commit assault and four firearm-related charges.
