Kevin Willard on Maryland fans booing his return to DMV: ‘They wasted a Saturday’

For one day, Brandon Crawford traded his allegiance to Maryland men’s basketball to Georgetown.

The rationale had nothing to do with Hoyas scuffling for better seeding in the Big East or coach Ed Cooley displaying some emotion on the sideline. It was all about Villanova coach Kevin Willard in his return to the D.C. metro area for the first time since he unceremoniously left the Terps to fill the opening with the Wildcats.

“Today, we’re Hoyas fans,” said Crawford, an Eldersburg resident and 2017 Maryland graduate who attended Saturday afternoon’s game with Pat Eger of Sykesville and another friend who declined to be identified. “We wanted to let Willard passionately know how we felt when he left the program the way that he did.”

The trio were members of a small band of Terps fans who dotted the sections inside Capital One Arena. The crowd informally numbered about 25 — well short of calls in October to flood the venue with attendance in the hundreds — with many of them finding prime locations in sections 100 and 101 behind the Villanova bench.
