MARYLAND (WBFF) — Since its creation at the start of last year’s legislative session, the Maryland House Freedom Caucus — a seven-member bloc of some of the chamber’s most conservative Republicans — has said it is committed to fighting for a “freer, safer and more prosperous Maryland.”
But the group’s confrontational approach, both on social media and on the House floor, has exposed sharp divisions not only with Democrats but also within the Republican Party in a chamber dominated by a Democratic supermajority.
Chaired by Del. Matt Morgan of St. Mary’s County, the caucus is affiliated with the national State Freedom Caucus Network. That network is modeled after the congressional Freedom Caucus that’s led by U.S. Rep. Andy Harris, Maryland’s only Republican member of Congress.
In an email to The Baltimore Sun, Morgan declined to elaborate on the caucus’ relationship with House Republican leadership but pledged to “continue to hold Republican elected officials accountable for not living up to their campaign promises.”
