Maryland lawmakers race to meet Crossover Day deadline

Maryland lawmakers have until 11:59 p.m. on Monday to advance legislation and make good on key promises, like lowering costs and bolstering the state’s economy.

Monday is Crossover Day, the final day for a bill to pass its chamber of origin so it can be considered in the other, giving both bodies ample time to review, debate and vote on key legislation. Any bill that fails to pass one chamber by this deadline is unlikely to progress further and may have to be reintroduced in the next legislative session.

This deadline comes as the Democratic-controlled legislature faces a laundry list of vital priorities that need to be addressed by April 13, when the session ends.

So far, the General Assembly has only passed one bill that was signed into law — a ban on 287(g) agreements that allow local law enforcement to collaborate with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport undocumented immigrants detained in local jails.
