
MARYLAND (WBFF) — Maryland State Parks is celebrating America’s 250th birthday by challenging residents to hike 250 miles in state parks next year.
The “Miles for Maryland” trail challenge kicks off on Jan. 1, 2026 with First Day Hikes across state parks, and runs until Dec. 31.

Marylanders can complete the challenge as an individual or team.

Registration starts at $25 on the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ website. Park entry fees will apply.
To track your miles, state officials recommend using your smart phone, smart watch or other apps. You can also utilize trail maps, directional signs and a journal.

Everyone who registers will get a commemorative keepsake. People who complete the 250 miles will also be entered for additional prize drawings.
