CUMBERLAND, MD (WBFF) — A Maryland State Police helicopter crew rescued a mountain biker on Sunday who suffered a seizure on a remote trail in Rocky Gap State Park.
Rescue personnel from Allegany County were dispatched around 11:09 a.m. to the park for the biker, who experienced a seizure and then fell. Because of the victim’s remote location, the expected lengthy extrication time and the nature of the injuries, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested to conduct an aerial hoist rescue.
Trooper 5, the Maryland State Police helicopter based in Cumberland, responded. Local emergency medical services and rescue personnel provided patient care on the ground and helped package the patient for transport.
After Trooper 5 arrived overhead, a trooper/rescue technician was lowered into a clearing in the trees, where the victim was prepared for extraction using an aerial rescue vest device. The helicopter’s pilots then hovered over the wooded area and hoisted the victim into the aircraft.
Once the patient was inside, the flight crew initiated a medical evacuation to a local hospital for treatment.
