Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Maryland Correctional and Training Center in Hagerstown.

Police say that the inmate, identified as 36-year-old Wenhui Sun, was pronounced dead by emergency medical services personnel following an altercation with two other inmates.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Dec. 16, when the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was alerted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit.

Preliminary findings suggest that Sun was involved in a physical confrontation with two other inmates, whose identities are being withheld pending charges.

After the altercation, Sun was taken to the facility’s medical unit, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Maryland State Police investigators and crime scene technicians from the Forensic Sciences Division responded to the scene to gather evidence.
