MARYLAND (WBFF) — A Powerball jackpot run that captivated the nation for over three months concluded on Christmas Eve with a ticket sold in Arkansas winning the second-largest prize in the game’s history, according to Maryland Lottery and Gaming.
The jackpot, initially advertised at an estimated annuity value of $1.7 billion, surged to $1.817 billion with a cash option of $834.9 million due to final ticket sales.
This is the second time in Powerball’s history that two consecutive jackpot runs have exceeded the $1 billion mark, with the previous jackpot hit on Sept. 6 at $1.787 billion with two winning tickets sold in Missouri and Texas.
In Maryland, the Christmas Eve drawing was particularly rewarding, producing over 136,000 winning tickets with prizes ranging from $4 to $100,000.
The most notable win was a $100,000 prize on a ticket sold at Dash In, located at 2575 Riva Road in Annapolis.
Additionally, four $50,000 prizes were awarded on tickets sold at Royal Farms in Elkridge, 7-Eleven in Germantown, and Safeway locations in Middletown and Wheaton.
Throughout the jackpot run from Sept. 7 to Dec. 24, Maryland Powerball players won a total of $11.3 million in prizes. This included 29 tickets that won $50,000 or more, with significant wins such as two $1 million prizes on tickets sold in Clinton and Lanham, and a $500,000 prize on a ticket sold in Upper Marlboro.
Maryland’s Powerball sales during this period amounted to $61.7 million, contributing $15.4 million to state programs and services. Retailer commissions from these sales totaled $3.5 million, supporting local businesses across the state.
The Christmas Eve drawing marked the 47th in this record-setting jackpot run, which set a new benchmark for the most drawings in a Powerball jackpot cycle.
