PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (7News) — The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is investigating Thursday night’s traffic stop turned deadly police shooting in Hyattsville.
The name of the lieutenant who fired his weapon and the name of the driver who was shot are expected to be released within the next day or so.
IID generally releases body-worn camera and dash camera footage within 20 days of an incident.

The shooting took place at around 8:30 p.m. Thursday near 23rd Avenue and Ager Road.
A Prince George’s County Police lieutenant conducted a traffic stop and found probable cause to search the vehicle, then waited for backup to arrive, Chief George Nader said in a press conference later that night.
The driver, a man, was told to get out of the car during the search and wait with the other officer while the lieutenant searched inside – but the suspect evaded and got back in the car and took off with the lieutenant inside, who fired his weapon, Nader said.
The suspect’s car crashed into a pole, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
Both officers were hurt in the struggle, with the lieutenant needing more medical attention for his more serious injuries, according to a department spokesperson. They are out of the hospital.
