MARYLAND — Mervo football made timely plays on offense and simply swarmed on defense against visiting Old Mill on Friday, the reward a solid 42-7 win that puts the No. 5 Mustangs into next week’s Class 4A/3A state title game.
Mervo (11-1) will meet Sherwood — a 42-14 winner over Perry Hall in Friday’s other semifinal — for the state championship next week. All the six title games will take place at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis from Dec. 4-6 with specific dates and times yet to be set.
On Friday, the Mustangs set an immediate and lasting tone with touchdown drives on all four of their first half possessions while only yielding one first down from the Patriots’ offense for a 28-0 advantage at the break. Running back Lamont Smith had touchdown runs of 39 and 40 yards and quarterback Jaylin Solomon threw two touchdown passes in the take-charge first half.
After congratulating his group on the win, Mervo coach Patrick Nixon twice repeated: “This is not the goal — we have to finish.”
