New video revives attention on Shell gas station shooting in Columbia

A new video circulating online Friday is drawing fresh attention to the non-fatal shooting of a clerk at a Shell gas station in Columbia.

The video is seen as Howard County police prepare to file charges against the suspect that they say was captured on surveillance video firing inside the store.

The shooting happened on April 17 at the Shell gas station along Cradlerock Way in Howard County. Police released images of the suspect Monday showing a woman pointing a gun and then shooting the clerk. Police later identified the suspect as Shantay O’Donnell, of Virginia.

The incident is still resonating among customers at the gas station.

“I don’t know much about mental health. Um, how it looks, but you could definitely tell there was something going on mentally with her, disturbed. I don’t think that’s an excuse for what happened,” customer John Erskine said.

Customer Riley McCognahy said, “I mean, she just looked mad about something, at least coming from me. She was either mad or she was just having a bad day and this is just the place she decided to make the bad day worse.”

After being identified from what was described as a viral video of the shooting, O’Donnell is currently in police custody in another state on unrelated charges, police said. Police said she will be served with several Howard County charges in the coming days.

As that process plays out, additional video has been spreading online. Videos of O’Donnell have surfaced on social media in which she appears to talk about the shooting and other crimes. In one clip, she is seen sitting in a car and says she knows police are looking for her. In another portion of the video, she says, “I steal, I shot that man…Bet he ain’t laughing now.”

Erskine said he came across the video online.

“I saw the video on Instagram and I was like, wait, is this another video of her?” he said.

McCognahy said the posts add to unease.

“A lot of people just post really stupid things on the internet too, so I’m not surprised that she did post that. But it definitely doesn’t make you feel good, doesn’t makes you feel safe,” McCognahy said.
