Nissan driver, passenger killed after crashing into semi on US 301 in Brandywine

Two people are dead after the Nissan they were in crashed into a Freightliner semi truck on U.S. 301 in Prince George’s County on Monday night.

The crash happened along U.S. 301 southbound at Brandywine Road just minutes before midnight. The Nissan and semi were both headed southbound when for unknown reasons, the Nissan struck the rear of the semi, Maryland State Police (MSP) said.

The driver of the Nissan, 39-year-old Douglas Orlando Smith, died at the scene. The passenger, who has not been identified yet, also died at the scene.

The semi driver was not injured, MSP said.

Lanes were shut down for five hours after the crash, but have since reopened. An investigation is underway.
