Pet dog rescued after sliding down steep ice-covered ditch in Northern Virginia

A 10-year-old Black Labrador named Shelby is back home and safe after Prince William County Fire and Rescue crews helped her out of a dangerous situation on Wednesday.

Fire officials said crews were called earlier in the afternoon for help after Shelby slid several hundred feet down a steep, ice-covered embankment near her home in Dumfries, Virginia.

Responders from Fire Station 23 in River Oaks arrived and determined the dog could not safely climb back up on her own.

Fire and rescue personnel carefully made their way down the ditch and secured Shelby, giving her what officials described as a “free ride” back to safety. She was reunited with her owners shortly after the rescue.

Shelby appeared unhurt, though her owners said they planned to have her examined by a veterinarian as a precaution.
