PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (7News) — The Prince George’s County Police Department is putting out a warning about scams targeting people in the community.
Police said one of the scams involves someone impersonating a representative from Pepco. Investigators said one victim lost more than $15,000.

According to police, the scammers appear at their victim’s door, claiming the utility has detected a serious problem with the main breaker panel in the home. Once the victim allows the scammer in, they go to the breaker panel and turn off the main breaker. That’s when they demand money for a fix.
As with many scams, the crook creates a sense of urgency and fear. Police are saying don’t fall for it. They say to demand to see an ID and check with the utility itself. Do not let the person into your home.
PEPCO said never open the door to someone you don’t recognize. Ask for a photo ID through a window. The utility also said call 202-833-7500 to verify an employee’s identity or any work being done.
Investigators added that there is another scheme making the rounds in Prince George’s County, but did not yet provide details on it.
The department is set to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. about the crimes.
