Protester comes down from Frederick Douglass Bridge after dayslong standoff

The man who scaled and spent several days atop the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in D.C. finally came down on Wednesday morning, days after he said he ran out of water.

The man, who identified himself on social media as Guido Reichstadter, had been on the bridge since Friday, May 1.

“I’m still here on the bridge. My water ran out Sunday & I’m heading down in the morning,” Reichstadter said in an X post on Tuesday.

Police and other first responders remained by the bridge as the situation unfolded, monitoring the situation. All inbound and outbound lanes on the bridge are currently blocked.

The incident prompted traffic disruptions and a large public safety response over several days.
