People celebrating New Year’s Eve in the DMV will have several free ride options aimed at reducing drunk driving during one of the most dangerous times of the year on the roads.

Here’s how to get a free ride home:

METRO:

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said Metrorail will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Tuesday and remain open until 2 a.m., adding two extra hours of service.

Riders are encouraged to check last train times for their specific stations, as some stations may see final departures before 2 a.m.

Metro is partnering with Molson Coors to offer free fares from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Faregates will be open during that window, and customers will not need to tap on rail or bus services.

On New Year’s Day, Metro trains will operate on a Weekend Late Night schedule all day, opening at 6 a.m. and closing at midnight.

Parking at Metro facilities will also be free starting at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and will remain free on New Year’s Day.

LYFT:

In addition to public transit, Washington Regional Alcohol Program is offering free rides through its Holiday SoberRide program in partnership with Lyft.

The program runs nightly from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. through Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, and provides up to $15 per trip for eligible riders across the greater Washington region.

Riders must be at least 21 years old and celebrating with alcohol.

To use SoberRide, riders can download the Lyft app, go to the payment tab, select “Add Lyft Pass,” and enter the SoberRide promo code. WRAP said promo codes will be released at 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 on its website here.
