‘Rising illnesses’ closes Prince George’s County elementary school for rest of the week

A Prince George’s County elementary school will close for the remainder of the week after officials noted “rising illnesses” impacting more than 60 students and staff, according to a statement released Tuesday night.

Officials said cases of increased influenza-like and gastroenteritis-like symptoms were reported among 48 students and 16 staff members at Princeton Elementary School in Suitland.

School officials said the school will undergo a deep cleaning and sanitization at for the rest of the week, and encouraged parents to track any symptoms amongst their students.

“Parents and guardians are urged to keep children home if they exhibit any symptoms of illness and to practice standard preventive measures, including regular handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes. Further updates regarding the school’s reopening and instructional plans will be communicated directly to families,” PGCPS Associate Superintendent Denise Douglas said in the statement.

Officials from Prince George’s County Public Schools and Prince George’s County Health Department did not provide exact details on the type of disease.
