BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — A Rosedale woman has kicked off the new year with a life-changing win, claiming a $1 million prize in the Maryland Lottery Holiday Raffle, Maryland Lottery and Gaming announced.
Karen L. won the drawing, held on Jan. 2, which coincided with the birthday of Karen’s late mother, a connection she believes played a role in her good fortune.
“I think it is my mom again. She is helping me with my retirement,” Karen said with a smile.
Karen, who purchased her ticket at the 7-Eleven on 1801 Reisterstown Road in Pikesville, initially delayed checking her ticket until Jan. 5.
Upon scanning it with the lottery app on her smartphone, she received a prompt to “Go to Lottery.”
Initially, she thought she might have won one of the 10 second-tier $100,000 prizes. However, a store clerk’s prediction that she had won the top prize proved true when the ticket was scanned, revealing the $1 million win.

The Baltimore County resident, who regularly buys Powerball, Mega Millions, and scratch-off tickets, was excited to try the $20 Holiday Raffle ticket for the first time. With her newfound wealth, Karen plans to buy a car, renovate her home, and secure her finances and savings. “It still hasn’t hit me yet,” she admitted.
The Maryland Lottery Holiday Raffle, which ran from Nov. 3 through Jan. 1, offered a top prize of $1 million and 10 prizes of $100,000 each.
Tickets were sequentially numbered from 000001 to 237206, with a total of 237,206 tickets sold.
A complete list of winning numbers is available on the Holiday Raffle page at mdlottery.com, where players can also check their tickets using a search tool or the Maryland Lottery app. Winners have 182 days from Jan. 2 to claim their prizes.
