Several people sick after carbon monoxide leak at Gaithersburg apartment buildings

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Emergency crews are investigating high carbon monoxide readings at two adjacent apartment buildings in Gaithersburg, Maryland, after several people became sick Saturday morning.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) first responders were called around 8:44 a.m. Sept. 5 to 422 N. Summit Avenue for a reported gas leak involving multiple sick people.

Crews found high levels of carbon monoxide inside the building and began evaluating residents for possible transport.

Officials later reported more high carbon monoxide readings at the neighboring building at 420 N. Summit Avenue.

Eight people from the affected apartment at 422 N. Summit Avenue were being evaluated, according to officials. At least two people were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.

Fire officials initially said five people were being evaluated before crews found elevated readings in the next building.

There is no word yet on what caused the gas leak.
