Maryland Del. Kathy Szeliga said Tuesday that her campaign finance committee may have been the victim of financial fraud and theft as federal authorities examine a six-figure discrepancy tied to the campaign’s bank account.
Szeliga, a Republican who represents Baltimore County, said she was recently notified that the campaign treasurer who handled the committee’s finances may have mishandled funds.
The treasurer is believed to be longtime GOP campaign treasurer James Appel, though he was not directly named in Szeliga’s statement.
“Learning that a professional treasurer, and someone I considered a fiduciary, may have violated our trust is both heartbreaking and infuriating,” Szeliga said in a statement Tuesday. “The contributions donated to our campaigns are given by hardworking citizens who believe in the democratic process, and when wrongdoing like this occurs, those donors ultimately become victims as well.”
