MARYLAND — Maryland lost nearly 25,000 federal jobs in 2025, the largest decline of any state in the nation, according to new employment estimates released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, underscoring the outsized impact of federal workforce reductions on the state’s economy.
The data show federal employment in Maryland fell by an estimated 10,300 positions combined in October and November, the first months to reflect deferred resignations that took effect Oct. 1 under the Trump-Vance administration’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce.
Since January, Maryland’s federal job losses are estimated at 24,900, according to the report.
The administration began pursuing workforce reductions earlier this year through a combination of layoffs and voluntary resignations, with a stated goal of cutting nearly 300,000 federal positions nationwide. In October, the administration also presided over what officials described as the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history, disrupting work for roughly 269,000 Maryland residents employed by the federal government.
