SUN: Harborplace developer warns Baltimore’s neighborhoods can’t thrive without downtown

Baltimore’s downtown is in crisis, and allowing it to deteriorate further threatens investment across the entire city, Harborplace developer David Bramble said Thursday as he acknowledged the start of his waterfront redevelopment has slipped into next year.

“Our central business district is in a crisis,” Bramble, co-founder and managing partner of MCB Real Estate, said during the RECHARGE Baltimore Housing Summit at Coppin State University. “What thriving city has a downtown that looks like a zombie apocalypse? The answer is none.”

Bramble’s warning comes as Baltimore struggles with declining downtown commercial property values, shuttered businesses and diminished tax revenue, while city officials consider a substantial property tax incentive for his proposed Harborplace redevelopment.

The developer argued that revitalizing the Inner Harbor is essential not only to attracting visitors and residents downtown but also to protecting investments in neighborhoods throughout Baltimore.
