The Howard County Public School System canceled all after-school activities and community-sponsored events at three high schools Wednesday as an investigation of a threat is underway.

Activities were canceled at Atholton, Guilford Park and Hammond high schools “while a safety and security threat is investigated,” a message sent to the school system community reads. The Howard County Police Department said the school system notified police about the cancellations after it learned of a rumor about a possible fight between students.

“[School resource officers] are looking into the validity of the rumor involving specific juveniles and do not believe there is or was an active threat to any of the school,” the police department said in a statement.

The three schools are in the southeastern area of the county.
