State Del. Nino Mangione was selected Saturday by the Baltimore County Republican Central Committee to fill the vacant District 3 seat on the Baltimore County Council, succeeding longtime Republican Councilman Wade Kach, who resigned earlier this month because of health issues.

Mangione emerged from a field of seven Republican candidates seeking the appointment. The committee held a public hearing Saturday at the Holiday Inn Timonium before voting on a nominee to complete the remainder of Kach’s term, which expires in December.

Kach stepped down effective May 7, citing health problems that he said were unforeseeable at the time of his 2022 reelection. The MAGA Republican represented northern Baltimore County on the council for more than 11 years after serving nearly four decades in the Maryland House of Delegates.

The candidates seeking the appointment included Tim E. Braue, Todd Huff, Lynne Jones, Mangione, E.J. McNulty, Eric Rockel and Gerard Wittstadt.
