SUN: Steve Pappas, Ocean City’s Original Greene Turtle owner, dies

Steve Pappas, who transformed Ocean City’s Original Greene Turtle from a beach-town pub into a regional sports bar brand, died Wednesday, marking the loss of a longtime fixture in the resort town, Mayor Rick Meehan said. Meehan called Pappas’ death “a tremendous loss for the family and for all of us that knew him in Ocean City.”

“I’ve known Steve for probably 50 years and he has always had that been bigger than life personality with that loud raspy voice and great sense of humor. He was just one of the guys to a lot of us who knew him well but he was also a very kind and caring man,” Meehan said. “We all loved Pappo and his presence will always be with us. He gave back so much to Ocean City and to all of us that knew him.”

Local event promoter Brad Hoffman remembered Pappas for his optimism, generosity and larger-than-life presence. “You embraced this town with a big bear hug. This town is better because of you,” Hoffman wrote in a tribute.
