SUN: There are too many turtles in this Taneytown pond

At Roberts Mill Park’s pond, Taneytown anglers have been reeling in more shells than scales.

A wildlife management company relocated 25 turtles from the roughly 4-acre pond over Memorial Day weekend, the second year of a state-approved effort to manage the population, which town officials say has gotten out of hand.

In total, 90 reptiles have been relocated in an ongoing effort to return the pond to turtle stasis.

“Over the years, we have had a boom in the turtle population at this pond,” said Taneytown Department of Parks & Recreation Director Lorena Vaccare. “A lot of anglers indicated to us that, yes, they were catching a lot of turtles.”
