Baltimore Del. Caylin Young was accused of misdemeanor assault Saturday after an alleged domestic incident on the road early New Year’s Day, according to charging documents obtained by The Baltimore Sun.
Court records show Young, a 38-year-old Democrat representing District 45, has not been placed under arrest. The single second-degree assault charge filed against him, a broad misdemeanor, was applied for by his accuser, a woman who says Young yelled and struck her in the chest with a closed fist.
The Maryland court system allows anyone to apply for criminal charges without the input of police or prosecutors. Whether they are actually filed depends on a district court commissioner, who reviews the allegations but is not required to have a law degree. From there, prosecutors take over the case and can make decisions on its merit.
“Delegate Young denies each and every allegation against him,” defense attorney Robbie Leonard said Thursday. “We have already filed a motion for a speedy trial and look forward to our day in court.”
