Suspect in fatal shooting of Carroll County deputy captured in North Carolina

The suspect in a shooting that killed one Carroll County sheriff’s deputy and injured another was apprehended on Sunday, May 31, in Surry County, North Carolina.

Earlier Sunday, the suspect, 55-year-old Michael Puckett, was spotted on a wildlife game camera on Greenhill Road in Surry County, according to the Wytheville Police Department.

On Friday, May 29, deputies with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a welfare check request for a home on Fancy Gap Highway. When deputies arrived, they made contact with Puckett, who reportedly fired at the responding deputies, killing Deputy Logan Utt and injuring another deputy.

Officials said Puckett took off, resulting in a coordinated law enforcement search using both state and federal resources. The U.S. Marshal’s Service was offering a $10,000 reward for information related to his capture, with the FBI adding in another $60,000.
