Teen shot in the leg at Maryland’s Wheaton Mall, another arrested

A teen was hospitalized, and another teen was arrested after a shooting at Wheaton Mall, according to Montgomery County police.

Officials were called to the mall at the 11100 block of Veirs Mill Road at around 6 p.m. Friday after learning a teen was shot in the leg.

Police said a 17-year-old boy was sitting near a Cinnabon on the mall’s lower level when he suddenly stood up, pulled out a firearm and shot several rounds, striking a 13-year-old.

The 17-year-old left the area and ran to the Dicks Sporting Goods nearby, where he was stopped and held down by a security officer until police arrived.

The victim was taken to the hospital wth non-life-threatening injuries, while a teen boy was taken into custody. Police also recovered a firearm.

An investigation is ongoing. Officials said there is no longer a threat inside the mall.
