WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump is holding the eleventh Cabinet meeting of his second term on Thursday, as the partial government shutdown, driven by immigration policy and Homeland Security funding, drags on, causing airport chaos and TSA staffing emergencies and intensifying pressure on Congress ahead of a looming funding deadline.
Officials are expected to focus on emergency measures to stabilize TSA operations, amid warnings that some airports could be forced to shut down as staffing shortages worsen and unpaid workers continue to leave their posts. The meeting followsfailed efforts to ease delays, including the deployment of ICE agents to assist at airports.
At the center of the crisis is a political standoff over immigration enforcement, with Democrats demanding new oversight measures and Republicans resisting any limits on federal agencies. Negotiations have repeatedly broken down, even after signs of a possible deal.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, urged Republicans to end the filibuster to ease airport delays.
“When is ‘enough, enough’ for our Republican Senators. There comes a time when you must do what should have been done a long time ago, and something which the Lunatic Democrats will do on day one, if they ever get the chance,” Trump wrote. “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, and get our airports, and everything else, moving again. Also, add the complete, all five items, SAVE AMERICA ACT items. Go for the Gold!!!”
The meeting also comes as newly confirmed Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin steps into the role, and as the president pushes for the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act, which would include strict new ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements to vote.
