Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Chief Marc Yamada weighed in on the murder of a millionaire on Valentine’s Day at a senior center in Maryland.

Robert Fuller, Jr, 87, was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot wound to his head, said Yamada.

“[Police officers] were able to locate and release photos and a video of our suspect entering the building on the day of the murder. At the time, he was disguised in a wig and a mask, and through their investigation and after receiving crucial tips from the public, that’s that was the big break for us,” said Yamada.

“Detectives developed information that the suspect might be an employee at the senior living facility. They were able to finally identify Marquis James, and he was ultimately arrested after taking a firing a shot at a Maryland State Police Trooper up in Baltimore,” said Yamada. He said that as soon as the balistics from the shooting matched with Maryland State Police (MSP) evidence, they got an arrest warrant for James.

Yamada said that police still do not know James’ motive in Fuller’s killing.

“The good news is this particular suspect, who was obviously extremely dangerous, he was armed, he is now in custody and facing charges, and according to police, there was evidence that he was potentially plotting to attack again,” said Yamada.

Yamada said that over all, crime is going down in Montgomery County.

“We’re seeing encouraging trends in our crime patterns here in montgomery county, particularly in downtown silver spring since 2024 overall crime is down 8% throughout the county, and some of our biggest improvements include drops in violent crimes. Assaults involving guns are down 53% carjacking is down 35% auto theft is down 15% and robberies are down almost 9%,” said Yamada.

“We don’t often get a whole lot of thanks here in law enforcement. But yesterday, we had the opportunity to recognize more than 65 I think it was montgomery county police employees, both sworn and professional staff, during a department award ceremony,” said Yamada.
