Where do Maryland state lawmakers stand on socialism?

MARYLAND (WBFF) — Following a recent vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on a resolution condemning socialism, we reached out to Maryland state lawmakers to understand where they stand on the issue.

We asked lawmakers the following questions:

1. Do you condemn socialism as a form of government and economic system? Yes or no?
2. Do you believe socialist policies have a place in Maryland state government? If so, which policies or principles do you support?
3. Do you believe Maryland voters should know whether their elected representatives identify with, support, or reject democratic socialism?

Here are their responses:

Delegate Jesse Pippy (R)

Question 1: I condemn socialism.

Question 2: Socialist policies have no place in Maryland State Government.

Question 3: I believe voters should know whether their elected officials support socialism. It’s also alarming that Maryland Democrats appear to be openly embracing socialism.

Delegate Matt Morgan (R)

Question 1: Yes.

Question 2: No. Maryland does not need more government ownership, more central planning, or more wealth transfer dressed up as compassion. We have already watched Annapolis raise the largest tax increase in state history, drive up electric bills, and turn a multi-billion-dollar surplus into a deficit. That is the direction a socialist policy takes a state. Marylanders need lower costs, more jobs, and a government that lives within its means.

Question 3: Yes. Voters have a right to know what their representatives actually believe. If an elected official supports democratic socialism, they should say so plainly and defend the record that comes with it. I reject it. Maryland works when people keep more of what they earn, own their property, and are free to build a life without the state picking winners and losers. Maryland needs to stick with the principles and solutions that created the greatest country on earth.

Just to let you know – I do not support socialism or communism. These are horribly failed economic systems that time and time again have failed those countries that have adopted these policies. Our educational system is not providing the Paul Havey answer as to “The Rest of the Story.” I would strongly suggest that the social studies classes provide the novel or movie of Dr. Zhivago and what happened during the Russian Revolution in 1917 as well as the number of individuals slaughtered by Mao and Stalin. The public-school systems in America need to quit thinking that making everyone financially equal is heaven on earth.
