CHRISMAN, Ill. (TNND) — A 15-year-old boy from Illinois died after he was hit in the head by a line drive during baseball practice, a coroner confirmed.
The Peoria County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified him as Bentley Wolfe, adding that he was a sophomore at Chrisman High School.
The coroner said Wolfe was in critical condition when he arrived at OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria on March 3. He died three days later.
“Despite aggressive care and treatment, sadly, Bentley was pronounced brain dead on March 6, 2026, at 5:49pm.,” the coroner said in a statement shared on Facebook.
An autopsy revealed that Wolfe suffered “detrimental head trauma” due to blunt force trauma,” according to the statement, which also described him as “a very heroic organ donor.”
“Sincere condolences to his family, the students, and staff at Chrisman High School,” per the post.
Wolfe’s mother, Samantha Simpson, shared an emotional social media post announcing the death of her son.
“Never ever did I ever expect to be saying this but I want everyone to hear it from me. Bentley Kahne Wolfe has entered heaven where I know so many had open arms waiting on him,” Simpson wrote.
“We are in the donor process now hoping he can save others from ever having to experience something so tragic in their life,” she added.
An online obituary noted that Wolfe is survived by his parents, as well as seven siblings.
Aside from baseball, Wolfe played basketball for Chrisman High School and was active in the school’s FFA. Some of his favorite activities included tractors, trucks, “anything to do with farming,” as well as riding four wheelers and shooting guns.
He also loved spending time with his friends and girlfriend.
A celebration of life in honor of Wolfe will be held on Saturday at Chrisman High School, according to the obit.
