Three children were killed and three other people were seriously hurt in an apartment fire in Texas early Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

The Austin Fire Department (AFD) said the call came in around 12:50 a.m. When crews arrived, fire was coming from multiple windows.

Three other people — two adults and one child — were taken to the hospital and are in critical condition, AFD said. The three who were hospitalized were outside and told firefighters there were still people inside the apartment.

AFD said the victims were members of the same family. One firefighter suffered minor burns.

One crew began extinguishing the fire, while a second crew searched the apartment, AFD said. The fire was quickly put out and did not spread beyond the unit where it started.

“Fire was confined and contained to one apartment, the apartment of origin, the no other apartments were affected by fire or have fire damage,” AFD Division Chief Wayne Parrish said.

AFD said one building has been evacuated because gas and electricity have been cut. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Ages of the children were not released.
