A New Music City Miracle Happened Over the Weekend. How Did NC State Lose This Game.

North Carolina State University had no way to lose this game. They were up 31-28. After NC State turned it over on downs, Vanderbilt was marching downfield, but the Wolfpack secured what should have been a game-sealing interception with 64 seconds left. What followed defied all odds. Literally. 

For the Commodores, you see what happens when you don’t quit. The game isn’t over until you see those double zeros. It was an epic comeback for the program on Saturday. The Wolfpack tried to run out the clock. On fourth-and-3, they drew a delay-of-game penalty, leaving only six seconds on the clock. NC State needed to waste six seconds to secure the win, but the penalty backed them up to nearly their own goal line. Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey dropped back into the end zone and scrambled, but fumbled the football, allowing Vanderbilt to win 35-31 (via The News and Observer):

  

  

Bailey finished the day 24 of 36 passing for 262 yards, three touchdowns, one interception — and the fumble. It should’ve been a good day. It wasn’t.

 “He had a hell of a game until that play, he really did,” N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren said. “I know he feels terrible. I haven’t talked to him yet.” 

Keenan Jackson said every player has “something to reflect on,” and the team doesn’t put the outcome on Bailey. 

The junior quarterback was not made available for interviews after the game. 

The Wolfpack led by as many as 17 points midway through the second quarter. Vanderbilt put together a scoring drive at the end of the first half and two straight in the second, cutting N.C. State’s lead to three points.

Initially, that pressure didn’t get to the Pack. N.C. State put together a nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter to retake a two-possession lead. Bailey found Preston Douglas for a gain of 11 yards and Keenan Jackson for a 14-yard pass. Jackson made a 23-yard catch, with a defender in coverage and Bailey’s pass under pressure. His reception in the end zone put the Wolfpack back up two possessions.

When the Commodores responded again, the Wolfpack couldn’t find the end zone. N.C. State turned the ball over on downs at the Vanderbilt 31-yard line with 2:04 remaining in the game. “We preach finish in our program,” Jackson said. 

“It doesn’t all come down to one play. I’m mad at myself. I should’ve kept coming back to the football. We could’ve scored on that drive and never been in a situation where the game came below two scores.” 

The Commodores marched down the field with ease only needing a touchdown to win it. It looked like things were over. Until they weren’t. Brody Barnhardt intercepted a pass at the N.C. State 2-yard line.

The Wolfpack had a 99.9 percent chance of winning, yet they lost. NC State couldn’t do what 1,046 other teams could in similar situations. Bailey could’ve chucked the ball out of bounds to burn off the rest of the clock, but no.  

Brutal, but now there’s a new Music City Miracle.
