PENNSYLVANIA (WHP) — “DO NOT make the mistake President Biden made.” That was the plea from Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) as he urged President Donald Trump to fire Kristi Noem.
Fetterman took to social media Tuesday morning to publicly call for Trump to fire the controversial Department of Homeland Security Secretary.
“Americans have died. She is betraying DHS’ core mission and trashing your legacy to secure our border,” Fetterman continued. “DO NOT make the same mistake President Biden made for not firing a grossly incompetent DHS Secretary.”
Noem has been under siege for her handling of the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti during the Minneapolis protests. She is scheduled to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee in March as calls for her impeachment continue to intensify.
After his shooting, Noem accused Pretti of being a domestic terrorist and of wielding a gun before he was shot. Her statement is seemingly contradicted by bystander footage of the incident.
On Monday, Fetterman called for federal officials to “immediately end” ICE operations in Minneapolis.
“It has become an ungovernable and dangerous urban theatre for civilians and law enforcement that is incompatible with the American spirit,” Fetterman wrote regarding ICE operations.
After threats from Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats to refuse to vote for the bill unless funding for DHS is removed from a minibus appropriations bill, Fetterman rebuked the notion that ICE should be defunded or abolished.
I will never vote to shut our government down, especially our Defense Department.
Fetterman requested a conversation on the DHS appropriations bill, but said it is unlikely that will happen, and the U.S. will suffer as a result.
“We must find a way forward and I remain committed to being a vocie of reason and common sense,” Fetterman concluded.
The bill would need to pass the Senate by Friday, Jan. 30, to meet the funding deadline and avoid potential shutdowns.
