Bessent cuts interview to respond to urgent Trump message

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was answering questions during a taped interview on Thursday, left early to respond to an apparently urgent message from President Donald Trump.

Wilfred Frost, a podcast host and presenter for British network Sky News, was asking Bessent about economic topics before somebody offscreen interrupted the conversation.

“The president wants you right away,” the person said, prompting Bessent to leave immediately.

Frost said the secretary resumed the interview after an hour-long meeting in the White House Situation Room. He asked Bessent whether Trump was stressed.

“No, the president is in great spirits,” Bessent replied.

“The Iranian mission is proceeding well ahead of schedule.”

It’s unclear what the secretary and Trump spoke about. The administration has discussed ways to manage economic issues caused by the Iran war, though, which has created oil supply issues across the world. The Strait of Hormuz, a Middle Eastern passage through which a fifth of the world’s oil travels, has been shut down for much of the past two weeks.

Iran has threatened to attack any ship moving through the strait after a U.S.-assisted Israeli airstrike killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei last month. Oil prices have risen as a result, leading gas prices in the U.S. to follow.
