WASHINGTON (TNND) — A shutdown of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) took effect early Saturday morning.
Funding for DHS expired at midnight — impacting multiple agencies — but the rest of the federal government will be funded through September 30.
The following agencies fall under DHS:
The partial shutdown comes as Democrats and the White House exchanged proposals in recent days as certain lawmakers press for limits on President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts following the deadly shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis.
House Democrats are demanding a range of changes, including clearer identification requirements for ICE and other federal agents, the establishment of a formal code of conduct for the agencies, and greater reliance on judicial warrants in certain operations.
Party leaders said the measures are aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in how immigration enforcement is carried out.
Sen. John Fetterman, D-Penn., was the only Democrat to vote in favor of a bill that would have funded DHS.
Trump, meanwhile, said “Democrats have gone crazy,” adding that Blue cities are the most dangerous.
“ICE has done a phenomenal job. Border Patrol — we have a closed border for the first time in history. We have to protect law enforcement, our police, our Border Patrol, ICE, and others in law enforcement,” Trump told reporters on Friday.
“The Democrats have gone crazy. They’re radical left lunatics. That’s why their cities are so unsafe. The Blue cities are the cities that aren’t safe,” he added.
Lawmakers are now out of town for a 10-day break.
