Deputies: Online marketplace meetup in Fort Pierce ends in mass shooting; 4 shot, 1 sought

Four people were shot Sunday afternoon after an alleged online marketplace transaction turned into a violent ambush in Fort Pierce.

The shooting occurred at 1:15 p.m. on the 3600 block of Avenue R in Fort Pierce in front of a vacant house, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival, deputies secured the scene and rendered aid to the victims in coordination with St. Lucie County Fire Rescue.

A preliminary investigation revealed the incident may have begun as an attempted online marketplace transaction.

Investigators say they believe an individual arrived at the address for the purpose of buying an item, but was instead ambushed by three suspects who opened fire.

Four shooting victims have been identified and transported to the hospital for treatment, per deputies

Deputies believe a fifth individual may have been involved, and are working to identify and locate that individual.

Under Sheriff John Bolduc told CBS12 News that two victims are currently in surgery, two victims are likely stable, and one or two suspects are at large.

Bolduc said that witnesses were outside when the shooting happened and that they were uninjured.

Criminal Investigations Division detectives have reportedly taken over the investigation. A large law enforcement presence will be in the vicinity until the investigation is complete.
