The ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden was charged with first degree murder of his late wife Linda Stevenson, 64, who was found unresponsive in their Delaware home in December.

Following a weeks-long investigation into his wife’s death, William Stevenson, 77, was indicted by the New Castle County Superior Court on Monday. Unable to make his $500,000 bail, Stevenson is being held at Howard Young Correctional Institution while he awaits trial.

On December 28, police arrived at Stevenson’s residence after 11 p.m., responding to a “reported domestic dispute.” Linda was found on the floor unresponsive, and despite life saving measures she was declared dead in the early morning hours of December 29.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science conducted an autopsy on her body.

An obituary of Linda’s death stated that the 64-year-old woman “passed away unexpectedly.” There is no mention of her husband William in her obituary, only that she is survived by her daughter, granddaughter, her sister, and other relatives.

Investigators returned to the couple’s home on December 31.

The former First Lady married Stevenson in 1970 when was an 18-year-old college student. Stevenson was 23 at the time of their marriage. They divorced in 1975, roughly after the couple began working on then- New Castle County Councilman Joe Biden’s campaign.

Stevenson alleged that Jill began having an affair with the future president.
