Federal judge blocks termination of TPS for Haitians

A federal judge has blocked the termination of temporary protected status (TPS) for thousands of Haitians in the United States, providing relief to many families in South Florida, home to the largest Haitian population in the country.

The decision came at the last moment, as TPS status for Haitians was set to end Tuesday at 11:50 p.m.

The judge cited potential “irreparable damage” to Haitians if they were sent back to their home country, which the State Department has described as being controlled by “terrorist gangs.”

Immigration attorney Hector Quiroga advised those under TPS to consult with legal professionals to explore their options.

“The very first thing that they should be doing is working with an attorney, or a law firm, to figure out what other options they might have. Some do have other options, some don’t,” Quiroga said.

The ruling has temporarily halted the end of TPS, which was initially scheduled to end in early September before being postponed to today.
