Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) lambasted Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom for describing Israel as an “apartheid state.”
Fetterman spoke with Chris Cuomo and spoke of his support of President Donald Trump’s strikes in Iran. Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote with Republicans against a war powers resolution, which would have required congressional approval for further military actions in Iran. Senate Democrats failed to pass the resolution.
Fetterman touted that he was also the lone Democrat who came out in support of the Trump administration bombing an Iran nuclear facility last June. He accused the Democratic Party of becoming “more and more anti-Israel.”
“You know, Governor Newsom announced, now he just described Israel as an apartheid state,” Fetterman said. “I mean, that’s a talking point of the fringe of my party.”
Fetterman was referring to Newsom’s Tuesday appearance on “Pod Save America,” where he pushed back on the long instated foreign policy of the United States supporting Israel.
“The issue of Bibi is interesting because he’s got his own domestic issues,” Newsom said.
“He’s trying to stay out of jail. He’s got an election coming up. He’s potentially on the ropes. He’s got folks, the hard line, that want to annex the West Bank. [Journalist Thomas] Friedman and others are talking about it appropriately as sort of an apartheid state.”
Fetterman said he was “shocked” to hear Newsom, a 2028 presidential hopeful, speaking this way about America’s “strongest” ally.
“I mean, he might be more liberal, but I never thought he would actually go that way.”
