HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman has supported the Trump administration’s ousting of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
He said in an interview with Fox News on Monday that Maduro’s arrest is good for the U.S. and Venezuelans living under him, although some Democrats disagree.
“I’m open to better opportunities, you know, and I have to call it necessary – it’s positive, and I can’t just condemn it just because I happen to be a Democrat,” Fetterman said.
Democratic congressional leaders have denounced the Trump administration’s actions while criticizing Maduro, who stayed in power despite losing his most recent election. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both New York Democrats, said Trump needed congressional approval for Maduro’s arrest. American military forces captured him in an overnight operation this past weekend.
“Let me be clear: Nicolás Maduro is an illegitimate dictator,” Schumer said in a statement on Saturday.
“But launching military action without congressional authorization and without a credible plan for what comes next is reckless.”
State Secretary Marco Rubio has said that telling Congress about the operation would have risked Maduro’s arrest, and Trump has noted that lawmakers tend to leak information. Trump and Rubio have also been unclear with the administration’s plan for Venezuela, which is now led by interim President Delcy Rodriguez, formerly Maduro’s vice president.
