What could have ended in tragedy turned into a powerful reminder of the importance of teamwork — and a 14-month-old puppy’s will to make it home safe.
The Patterson Fire Department said the agency was called to the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area, which is in New York, on Sunday around 9:15 a.m. for an unusual emergency.
“Fourteen month old K9 Rudy had fallen approximately 15 feet down a cliff alongside Quaker Brook waterfall,” the fire department noted in a post on Facebook.
With snow and ice from a recent storm still covering the wooded trails — and the rescue site nearly a mile into the forest — firefighters quickly mobilized specialized vehicles and requested additional help from surrounding agencies, including the Putnam County Technical Rescue Team, Putnam Lake Fire Department and Brewster Fire Department, to get to the pup.
“It was a miracle he was uninjured and didn’t land in the water as the flow is currently at its annual high mark and loudly roaring down the hillside,” the fire department noted.
Against the backdrop of rushing water, Patterson Fire Department Capt. Jesse Greco, who’s also a member of the Putnam County Technical Rescue Team, was carefully lowered by rope down the icy cliff.
“After being stuck on a tiny, cold and wet ledge for over 2 hours, K9 Rudy signaled he was ready to go home by practically jumping into Captain Greco’s lap,” authorities said.
Moments later, both were lifted safely back to solid ground.

“Both Rudy and his owner are extremely grateful for tremendous effort of all the Firefighters and Rescue Technicians involved in bringing K9 Rudy home safely,” according to the fire department.
