WASHINGTON (TNND) — Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., is planning to introduce legislation in support of dog ownership after he made a post about supporting the animals over Muslims.
The bill, which was shared with the outlet The Hill, is set to be titled the “Protecting Puppies from Sharia Act” and would block federal funds to areas that prevent individuals from owning dogs. It is unclear where it is prohibited to own a dog.
“All the Democrats have criticized me, every single one of them, not a single one has said, ‘I promise I will never let anyone take your dogs away.’ You know why? Because they don’t want to offend those who do,” Fine told The Hill.
The bill explains, “Sharia law is a foreign concept that is against the pursuit of happiness.” It goes on to state that every American should have the right to own a dog.
Following the viral post, Fine also uploaded a screenshot from the anti-Israel activist Nerdeen Kiswani.
“Finally, NYC is coming to Islam. Dogs definitely have a place in society, just not as indoor pets. Like we’ve said all along, they are unclean,” Kiswani wrote.
Co-sponsors of the bill include Reps. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, Chip Roy, R-Texas, Mary Miller, R-Ill. and Keith Self, R-Texas.
In response to the post, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called Fine “an Islamophobic, disgusting bigot,” in a statement.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that Fine should resign from his position as a member of Congress. Fine responded to critics by depicting a puppy over a “Don’t tread on me” flag, instead of a snake.
