A former Dunbar police officer was arrested Saturday morning after a warrant in Cabell County was put out for his arrest for allegedly brandishing his weapon, records said.

Joshua Michael Hall, 21, had resigned from his position with the Dunbar Police Department the day before his arrest.

The incident took place just before 1:30 a.m. Friday morning at Boot’s Spirits and Feed in Huntington, according to a criminal complaint filed to Cabell County Magistrate Court.

In the complaint, police said that they spoke to three people, one of whom allegedly got into an argument with Hall. The victim alleged that Hall went to his vehicle and came back waving a handgun, threatening to shoot the person he was arguing with. One of the eyewitnesses stated that they were afraid for their life and that Hall was going to shoot them.

Police said they patted down Hall, where the handgun was located in his waistband and seized as evidence. Employees of Boot’s also said they could provide video footage of the incident at a later time.

The complaint said the witness statements and evidence were enough to file charges against Hall, and he was arrested Saturday morning.

Dunbar Police Chief John Garten confirmed that Hall had resigned from the department hours after the incident occurred.

“He resigned yesterday and he is no longer an active member of the Dunbar Police Department,” Garten said.

Hall started his law enforcement career at the Dunbar Police Department, but resigned to work for the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. However, Chief Deputy Sean Snuffer said that he was not with the sheriff’s office long.

“The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office did not retain him past his probationary period due to sustained policy violations,” Snuffer said.

Garten said Hall returned to the Dunbar Police Department for another six months before resigning.

Hall has been charged with brandishing a deadly weapon and is currently being held at South Central Regional Jail.
