Former Texas panhandle police officer who survived 2015 shotgun attack suffers stroke

Houston Gass, a longtime law enforcement officer in the Texas panhandle, is in a Fort Worth hospital after suffering what doctors believe was a stroke.

In 2015, Gass was a sergeant with the Pampa Police Department when was shot in the face with a 12-gauge shotgun during a domestic call.

The man who shot him, Ryan John Kelley, was convicted of attempted capital murder of a peace officer.

After taking more than two years off to recover, Gass was named the Chief of Police in Fritch.

In 2018, Gass was named Law Enforcement Today Magazine’s “Citizen of the Year,” for his resilience after being shot, inspiring community service and dedication within law enforcement.

Gass also worked for the Friona Police Department, Randall County Sheriff’s Office and Armstrong County Sheriff’s Office.

He retired from the Jacksboro Police Department in April 2025 after more than 26 years in law enforcement.
